Hollenbeck Canyon Hike (10 photos)

Hike into Hollenbeck Canyon near Jamul, following the route that Jerry Schad describes in “Afoot & Afield in San Diego County” (the unofficial “hiking bible” of San Diego). The area is remarkably beautiful in Spring, and Jamul Creek was flowing really good after the wet winter.

This is an easy hike without major difficulties except for the fact that the higher part of the canyon has little to no shade as you’re leaving the trees of the canyon bottom behind, and hike through open chaparral. As with all back country hikes, it’s not advised to do them as temperatures rise, ie. later in Spring, in Summer and in early Autumn. It’s just too hot out there then (and not as pretty as in Spring anyway).
