Ellie Lane Trail (and the Ellie Lane trailhead) are a more quiet alternative to the extremely popular Iron Mountain hike above Poway in San Diego’s northern back country. The trail leads up through an area called “Rock Haven”, dotted with jumbo granite boulders, before it reaches a saddle where it becomes the Miner’s Ridge Trail, and descends to Ramona Overlook. It then continues on the eastern side of the peak neighboring Iron Mountain’s north, before meeting with the Iron Mountain Trail, making for a nice 6-mile loop.
I’ve hiked this trail quite a number of times and find it most enjoyable either in the early morning or late afternoon. When the sun in the west illuminates the haze in the east, the landscape beyond often appears as if out of a dream. Or maybe that’s just me, because I’m not used to it, yet…
