Palomar Mountain has always been a little bit off of my list of places to visit, hike and photograph – not because the area isn’t attractive (it’s actually one of the more beautiful forested areas in all of San Diego County), but because it is a State Park, and dogs are usually not allowed in State Parks here in California, which means leaving a sad little dog and the best hiking buddy behind, at home – our little Tonigirl, of course. :)

But most recently, I’ve explored some of the trails at Palomar Mountain State Park for the first time, in the late afternoon – Lower Doane Valley and the old weir plus French Valley, as well as Upper Doane Valley, Doane Pond and Thunder Springs (which is not that thundering, I’d like to add). While the cloudless skies and hard light didn’t really help finding attractive subjects during this first visit, I was quite fond of the view from Boucher Hill, an old fire lookout – in particular, Rodriguez Mountain and the look into the land was quite enchanting…

Print available in my shop. More black & white photographs of Southern California landscapes are in my “California Monochrome” gallery.
