I guess it doesn’t exactly come as a surprise that my pick for the photo of the month from August is another photo from Algodones Dunes (aka Imperial Sand Dunes). But actually, this one photo is just a placeholder for the many dune photos (gallery) that I made during that one outing early in August.
I can honestly say that I am absolutely fascinated by the place. I only recently learned that well-known movies were filmed at least partially in the dunes, like the Tatooine scenes from Star Wars, and the original Stargate movie. And I’m a bit saddened that the monsoon storm season seems to be over now – in September the area will most likely be blueskied and clear, and see scalding temperatures. It’s just too hot then to wander up and down in the dunes, which is very strenuous in the soft sand.
The off-roaders will reclaim the most photogenic part of the dunes south of Highway 78 in fall and over the winter into spring. It is their right, the dunes are a designated off-highway vehicular recreation area. I however have to wait until next summer for another monsoon season to explore and photograph them again. And that’s a long wait! Thanks for reading! You can stay up to date with my blogposts and subscribe via email (the subscription form opens in a new browser window/tab). It's easy as pie! :-)
