My friend Detlev and I spent a more relaxed day in the desert on December 26th. On the way down Montezuma Grade Road we already saw dust blowing all over the Borrego Valley – it was a very windy and quite cool day.
After an early lunch in Borrego Springs we drove out to Fonts Point, but the conditions weren’t exactly comfortable at this popular and relatively exposed viewpoint over the Borrego Badlands. When the wind began to blow the dust right into our direction we left, but I managed to make a few photos, to illustrate what it was like. Even though it was a clear blue day, the dust in the air made the light and contrast a little bit softer, which helped make photos in harsh midday light.
We continued to Buttes Pass, hiked through The Slot and to the wind caves above Borrego Mountain Wash, then climbed out of the wash via “The Drop” and went back to the car above the canyon. I didn’t make photos there this time – if you’re interested, here are some from previous trips: Borrego Wind Caves (10 photos, black & white), West Butte Borrego Mountain Loop (16 photos, color).
