Afternoon hike to Parker Lake (10 photos)

After our morning walk at Convict Lake we had a look at the Eastern Sierra Fall Color Guide and found the short hike to Parker Lake very appealing for an afternoon excursion. I had seen beautiful pictures of Parker Lake before and had it on my list of potential places to visit anyway. The trailhead (Google Maps) is off of the June Lake Loop (the last mile or so is dirt road) and we arrived around 4pm.

The first part of the hike goes up a sunblasted moraine with no shade and was a bit steeper than we had anticipated. :-P The trail however soon leveled and entered a nice stand of Aspens, as it nears both Parker Creek and the lake. As we reached the lake, the sun was just about to disappear behind the mountains to the west, and we caught the last bit of sunlight hitting the autumnal Aspens, bringing them to a nice glow.

At 5pm the lake was entirely in the shade, evenly lit by the sky, the water was mostly calm – my favorite conditions! We soaked up the serene scenery with all of our senses, and continued a little bit along the southern side of the lake, where the trail goes a bit higher up and offers wonderful views over the lake. We spent about an hour there, enjoying the peace and silence, before going back the way we came, with nice views of Mono Lake at dusk.

  1. One of the most beautiful spots I’ve been lucky enough to see. I was fishing, but spentva lot of time in awe of the amazing scenery. Great photos.
