Carrizo Creek -- Coyote Mountains Wilderness Area, Imperial County, California, United States

The valley/wash between the darker mud hills at the bottom and the lighter eroded sandstone at the top is the bed of Carrizo Creek – a highly ephemeral body of water that drains a lot of the winter rains and summer monsoons of southern Anza Borrego. It can transport so much water that it forms an island of sparse greenery in the desert, the Carrizo Marsh.
