The literal translation of the mountain’s name is “comb wall”. The German word for comb is “Kamm”, and the verb “kämmen” (for combing) becomes “kampen” in Bavarian dialect. This could refer to a cockscomb, but I want to believe that the rock outcroppings that form the spine-like ridge of Kampenwand are actually combing through the clouds, on some days. :-)
