Colorful Lichens at Selby Rocks (5 photos)

My friend Peter and I couldn’t quite find a spot for sunset when we visited Carrizo Plain together. We were at the Soda Lake flower fields, then drove to Soda Lake Overlook, and finally ended up at Selby Rocks. All the searching was in vain of course, because the sunset was a bust anyway (the clouds in the sky didn’t light up)… but while wandering around Selby Rocks, I noticed these nice lichens of all colors, and made some close-up photos of them.

I don’t recall seeing so many different colors of lichens together – maybe they’re different kinds of lichens, or perhaps the different colors are different stages as they slowly dry out?
