Crows and ravens are wonderful photography subjects. They’re large enough that one doesn’t need a bulky and expensive telephoto lens to capture the beautiful detail and texture in their feathers, they’re curious and smart, often not shy of humans.
I was hiking on the Sunset Trail in the Laguna Mountains and this crow flew by just above me. I could hear the wind in the feathers of its wings, and I had the telephoto zoom lens on the camera and was able to track it – an extremely lucky moment:
At the Piedras Blancas viewpoint near San Simeon, the crows are so used to the people (who are all staring at the Elephant Seals), they don’t bother much and do not feel disturbed either:
And I think they are exceptionally nice in black and white. :-)
