Crystal Lake / Mammoth Crest / Minarets (11 photos)

On the 2nd day of our vacation at Mammoth Lakes, we hiked to Crystal Lake, and then further up to the Mammoth Crest. Just like every day, a thunderstorm moved on in quite reliably in the afternoon, giving the scenery a dramatic touch, and very interesting, even light.

We didn’t get rained upon too much though (but little Toni was super scared by the rumbling thunder of course and dragged Shuwen down the mountain while I fell behind as I made more photos) and I finished the day at the Minarets Vista Point above Mammoth Lakes, hoping for some more weather drama… which didn’t really commence. :)

I logged this hike and the tracklog is available on

  1. Yes, very nice.
We made it up to Crystal Lake in June. We have experienced Mammoth in the summer 4/5 times over the last 11 years and this was the first time we made the hike.
Mammoth is very visitor friendly. We found that they have a bus service to Horseshoe Lake every hour on the half that makes stops at the different lakes on the way up and down. The bus (trolley) pulls a long bike trailer, so we rented bikes and spent some time coasting down the bike path and stopping at the lakes on the way down.
Most of the path is in wooded areas.
