Wild cucumber (Marah macrocarpus or Marah macrocarpa, also called the Chilicothe, bigroot, manroot) uses old-growth Scrub Oak and Mountain Mahogany as climbing aide at the Del Mar Mesa Preserve.

A lot of people mistake wild cucumber for a parasite because it seems to grow on other plants. It only uses other plants as a climbing aid though, and does not harm or feed off of it’s “host” – it has a large underground tuberous root from which it grows in Spring, produces it’s spiky fruit, and then goes dormant again.
