Early Bloom

Psorothamnus/Indigo Bush blossoms, Anza Borrego Desert State Park, CA.

Early Bloom — near Truckhaven Rocks, Anza Borrego Desert State Park, CA. December 2013.

In the wash near Truckhaven Rocks, we found a couple of blossoms on a brush/tree – I got as close as possible to it with my 24-120mm lens, and heavily cropped the result at home – the blossoms are tiny, and what you’re seeing now is larger than they actually were. Their color is very beautiful!

This must be some kind of Psorothamnus, but which one? This one was blooming in mid December, so it’s most likely not a Smoke Tree (Psorothamnus spinosus; blooms in June). My best bet is that it is a Schott’s Indigo Bush (Psorothamnus schottii, Schott’s Dalea) since it was taller than 3 feet for sure. If you can help with the exact ID, please leave a comment. Thanks!
