Three photos from a late October hike at Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve East, near Julian. They are rather loosely connected, but still worthy to be called a triptych I think, tied together by their format, orientation, location…
This East preserve has two entrances, the western one at Highway 79 near Santa Ysabel, and the eastern one near Julian, off of Farmers Road (north of the entrance to Vulcan Mountain). Yep, that’s pretty confusing. :) I prefer the eastern entrance, the hike goes downhill through a pretty valley with open grasslands (still used for grazing cows), then climbs up to Kanaka Flats and the trail loops here. A beautiful mixture of oak woodlands, riparian areas down in the canyon, and pastures.
