After moving, I found myself close to an area that I hadn’t considered much in the past: at the northern fringes of Rancho Bernardo, just east of I-15 and south of the (most often dry) upper end of Lake Hodges, a nice trail parallels Highland Valley Road.
The trail is part of the San Dieguito River Park and in fact leads to their headquarters on Sycamore Creek Road. Out and back, it’s around 4 miles from the staging area near Pomerado Road.
Quite honestly though, I probably wouldn’t visit this trail a lot if I didn’t live so close by. The noise of I-15 is pretty audible for a good while, and there’s still a lot of “civilization stuff” visible all around. But right now, everything is so lush and green and beautiful there, it’s impossible to not be charmed by this little “suburban escape.” Have a look at the photos and I think you’ll agree. :)
