June Lake Loop & Mono Lake (7 photos)

After our visit to Devils Post Pile National Monument (previous two posts) we drove a little bit north. We had heard that the June Lake Loop is a beautiful scenic alternative to Highway 395 and wanted to take a look.

As soon as we made a turn onto Highway 158 (the June Lake Loop) it began raining cats and dogs. We drove on slowly and by the time we had reached Grant Lake, the reservoir at the mountain “portal” into the June Lake valley, the sun was coming out again, and there were some splendid moments with beautiful light.

Back on Highway 395 we continued north a little bit and then took Highway 120 east, since we were so close to Mono Lake already. We stopped at the scenic South Tufa area. The sunset, clouds and drama in the sky were quite amazing, but didn’t line up favorably for photos together with the tufas. Definitely a place that needs to be visited again!
