Fremont’s Deathcamas

Toxicoscordion fremontii (Frémont's Deathcamas, Common Star Lily; Melanthiaceae family), San Diego, California; April 2022.
Toxicoscordion fremontii (Frémont's Deathcamas, Common Star Lily; Melanthiaceae family), San Diego, California; April 2022.

Despite its name Common Star Lily, this plant is in the Melanthiaceae family (ie. it’s not a lily). The name DOES imply the plant’s toxicity properly: Deathcamas bulbs contain zygadenine (referred to in another common name for the plant, “Star Zigadine”), a toxic steroidal alkaloid.
