Frauenchiemsee or Fraueninsel (“Women’s island”) is an island in Bavaria’s Chiemsee lake, and the Benedictine women’s abbey is the central and dominating feature of the island – and actually still in use as an abbey. It was founded in 782.
Besides the monastery, the tiny (car free!) island of 15.5 hectare (38 acres) also has a hotel, restaurant, fishermen, and some small shops which are mostly oriented towards the tourists who visit the island using one of the small cruise liners that service the lake. Some stay overnight for retreats at the monastery. It is partially open to the public and has seminar rooms and simple guest chambers.
