Perennials are plants that live over multiple growing seasons. In the Mediterranean climate of Southern California, and in particular for perennial flowers, herbs, and vines, this often means that the visible part of the plant dies in the hot and dry summer months. The plant will regrow from under ground in the next growing season.

Weed’s Mariposa Lily (Calochortus weedii) is among the more stunning species in the Calochortus genus, if you ask me. The complexity of these flowers is quite striking. In San Diego County we only have the varierty weedii.

Monardella linoides ssp. linoides (Flax like monardella, Flaxleaf monardella) grows, as far as I can see, primarily along the Pacific Crest in San Diego’s Laguna Mountains, and in the high-altitude portion of Anza Borrego Desert State Park, north of Kwaaymii Point. I made these photos while hiking in the Laguna Mountains.
