Burned Black Oak at Rancho Cuyamaca State Park

Claws — Rancho Cuyamaca State Park, San Diego County, California. May 2012.

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park was severely burned by the 2003 Cedar Fire. The once beautiful, forested eastern slopes are still full of the pale, skeletal dead trees. On the way back from an afternoon hike to Cuyamaca Peak (at 6512 feet/1985 meters, 2nd highest peak in San Diego County) I photographed this dead Black Oak at dusk.
