Big Laguna is the largest body of water at Laguna Mountains (the other two being Little Laguna and Water Of The Woods). It is a man-made lake, the water is held-back by a little earthen dam. In Fall and Winter the water level is often low, and there’s more plants than water surface. Year-round, one can watch different waterfowl at the lake.
Winter storms fill the lake and in Spring and early Summer, it is often overflowing into the lower portions of Laguna Meadows, turning them into a boggy marsh. (from the meadows, the water then accumulates at the little pool named Water Of The Woods – when this one overflows, it flows down a ravine that enters Noble Canyon, and feeds Pine Creek.)
