I guess my pick for April’s photo of the month isn’t really a surprise for those who have been reading my blog posts in the past couple of days. It’s “Vortex” from the slot canyon below the “Domelands” area of Coyote Mountains Wilderness.
Why did I pick this? Because it is the best slot canyon photo that I’ve made so far. I’m fascinated with slot canyons, and ever since I began “chasing” them, I’ve been looking for “it” and, perhaps unsurprisingly, I didn’t really know what “it” was… until I saw this slot canyon. I had a feeling that “it” may be in there, and in this one spot where it makes a surprising curve I looked up, and the play of light & shadow seemed to be just right.
I’m really happy with the way this turned out. You never truly know what you have until you come home, and import, inspect and develop the photos. Imagine yourself standing in this narrow slot canyon, the camera on the tripod pointing upwards with a wide angle lens, trying to compose a photo like this. The contorted movements you have to make to actually see in the viewfinder what you’re doing are quite sweat-inducing. :)
