Schneeberg & Schneebergkreuz (14 photos)

For quite some years, many ski lifts and gondolas in skiing areas in the alps are also open in summer. This allows for day-trips to stunning alpine areas that would otherwise require more serious hiking. One such area is in the valley on the south side of the Hochkönig massif, with the communities of Mühlbach and Dienten.

The gondola from Mühlbach am Hochkönig to Karbachalm makes a ~700HM ascend entirely effortless (other than pulling out the wallet) and takes summer visitors to astonishingly beautiful alpine meadows, with high-lying bogs and marshes as well as fields of heather, lingonberry and blueberry (which hints at acidic soils in the area).

What remains for hikers are another 400HM of ascend to the summit cross of Schneeberg (1921m), and an easy traverse to Schneebergkreuz (1938m) from there. All the time, the views of the mighty Hochkönig massif are truly spectacular.

Here are some impressions from an easy afternoon hike to the peaks of Schneeberg and Schneebergkreuz. The weather became increasingly unfriendly though, as clouds pushed in and the winds became strong, gusty and cold.
