Sylvan Meadows (2 photos)

Early in April we hiked one of our favorite springtime areas: the Sylvan Meadows portion of the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve, near Murrieta in Riverside County. The reserve lies at the southern end of the Santa Ana mountains, and the Sylvan Meadows, north of Clinton Keith Road, are the part of it were dogs are allowed.

To call these meadows “sylvan” is perhaps a bit of an overstatement but then again, this is southern california, and while the stands of trees in groups of Engelmann Oaks and Sycamores do not necessarily resemble a forest, they are quite beautiful of course!

We went there more for the hiking with our friends than the photography, so I went lightweight without a tripod – just the camera, an all-round lens and a polarizer. It was a rather sunny day with a brisk and fresh wind that kept everyone cool. A slight haze rendered the light softer than I had anticipated, and the photos came out so nicely straight from the camera that they didn’t need much treatment at all.
