In the excellent hiking guide (“Afoot & Afield San Diego County”) by the late Jerry Schad, I stumbled over the sentence “space is the hallmark of the Anza Borrego desert”. One of the places where I completely understood that was on West Butte Borrego Mountain – the word “mountain” may be a bit much to some, for a granite hill rising to a mere 1115 ft. above sea level, but because it is (except for the neighboring East Butte, in the photo above) a pretty solitary rise from the desert floor, it makes for quite an exceptional experience of that spaciousness.

The gusty winds and cool temperatures on our hike created a “yin & yang” kind of feeling – exposed to the wild forces of nature, yet in a state of peace and tranquility, surrounded by the vast emptiness of the desert below. I made a long exposure (80 seconds) to render the moving clouds into more abstract streaks, to help transport the somewhat abstract, serene feeling of the place.
